The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is designed to be capable, safe, comfortable and spacious with the ability to take on roads that others can't with nothing to hold you back - the perfect crossover! The 2020 Hyundai Kona is a recent newcomer to the market with somewhat of an identity crisis. Hyundai calls it both a small SUV and also a utility vehicle. Car and Driver calls it a subcompact. One thing is certain, the Kona is small - REALLY SMALL! Even though the MSRP of the AWD Crosstrek is $335 more than the AWD Kona, what you get far surpasses the price difference in comfort, safety, performance and convenience.  Car and Driver states, "Crosstrek offers all the trappings of a modern SUV in a value-loaded package."

All-Wheel Drive

Subaru is the leader in All-Wheel Drive technology and every Subaru Crosstrek comes with it - standard! The Hyundai Kona is primarily a FWD vehicle with an AWD add-on package. Learn more about Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System and how it ensures outstanding grip in snow, rain, or rough terrain.

Comfort, Space, Visibility

"The Crosstrek seats five, and the driver enjoys excellent visibility in all directions. The rear seats provide a solid amount of legroom so adults can ride in the back without issue." U.S. News

It's no wonder the 2020 Crosstrek is more roomy than the Kona - the Crosstrek is 11.8" longer than the Hyundai!

2020 Crosstrek interior and dash

"The 2020 Crosstrek is impressive in its ability to tackle tough off-road situations in mud, dirt, snow and sand. With 8.7 inches of ground clearance and the added benefit of available X-Mode, the Crosstrek can venture in places few small-crossover SUVs dare go." KBB

"With its 8.7 inches of ground clearance, standard symmetrical all-wheel drive and X-Mode off-road traction system, the Crosstrek goes above what is offered on a Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 or Hyundai Kona." AutoTrader

That extra 2" of ground clearance vs Kona's 6.7" is a BIG DEAL! Not only does it make the Crosstrek more versatile, it makes it MUCH EASIER TO GET IN/OUT - especially for taller people or when putting children in car seats.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek has a towing capacity of 1,500 lbs while the US version of the Kona is NOT RATED FOR TOWING. According to, the Crosstrek has a range of 498 miles vs 370 for the Kona, a pretty big difference.

Price Difference

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek MSRP starts at just $23,155 vs the 2020 Hyundai Kona with AWD at $22,820, including destination charges. That's a +$335 cost difference for a larger, more capable Crosstrek.
When comparing prices from manufacturers or getting dealer quotes, ALWAYS make sure the destination charge is included.

Multi-media and connectivity

2020 Crosstrek and Kona both offer a multi-media/information display and both support Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and SiriusXM (subscription required).
All Subaru Crosstrek trims except the base model INCLUDE the  SUBARU STARLINK system.

"Subaru's StarLink infotainment system is clearly organized, offers plenty of connectivity features as standard, and is easy to navigate in everyday use." Car and Driver

Accident avoidance systems

Both Subaru and Hyundai have excellent advanced active safety features, albeit they work differently and offer slightly different feature sets with different name terminology. Subaru's system is called EyeSight Driver Assist Technology and Hyundai's is called SmartSense. Both systems offer Forward Collision Avoidance and Lane Keeping Assist. However, standard on every Crosstrek is Adaptive Cruise Control, which is only available on the Ultimate (most expensive) trim level of the Kona. See how Subaru's Adaptive Cruise Control helps relieve the strain of driving (below).

Boxer Engine (across the entire product line)

At the heart of every Subaru is the horizontally opposed boxer engine developed to combine balance with power and efficiency. It's the same proven engine design that drives our family cars as well as our high-performance WRX-STi rally cars.

The advantages include: Low profile, providing lower center of gravity for predictable handling. Produces less vibration than other engine designs.  SUBARU BOXER engines help enhance overall vehicle safety and longevity.
It's no wonder 96% of Subarus sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today! Hyundai does not offer the boxer engine.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

Subarus are designed and engineered from the start to be all wheel drive. Notice how the components are aligned in a straight line from the boxer engine --> transmission --> drive train and that both sides are symmetrical. This symmetry is incredibly efficient and provides power to all four wheels all the time for maximum traction, balance and control.
To get power to the rear wheels on the Kona requires several 90-degree turns to align the transmission with the rear drive shaft. This is very inefficient and often results in reduced MPG.  Also, notice how one front axle is longer than the other on the Kona. This can cause torque steer where heavy acceleration can cause the vehicle to veer unpredictably to the left or right. Torque steer can be scary for novice drivers such as teen drivers who have a tendency to "experiment" with acceleration and lose control.

Consumer Reports sums up the 2020 Crosstrek this way:

"The Crosstrek is Subaru's pseudo-SUV; it's essentially an Impreza hatchback with a raised ride height and some rugged visual cues. Since it's based on the already-good Impreza, it has that model's smooth ride, good fuel mileage, easy-to-use controls, and roomy rear seat. As a result, it's ranked at the top of our subcompact SUV standings."
